Psalm 1:1–2 The Deep Roots of Delight Have you noticed we never have to be alone with our thoughts anymore? There was a time when in a waiting room, you read any old magazine to pass the time. Now you can pull out your phone and check email or play games. We are constantly on. How does the still, small voice of our Father break through all the commotion? The biblical witness is that God spoke to Moses, to David, and to many others, not because they had special abilities but because they made the time and space to listen. Down through time, God’s people have found his Word their delight! All of us delight in something. Delight determines direction. All too often, Christianity is reduced to a list of dos and don’ts, but the Lord intends it to be about delight. We are blessed when our “delight is in the law of the LORD,” when we meditate on those laws “day and night” (Psalm 1:2). Part of the blessing is the strength we gain. The battle against temptation is won by delight—delight in the freedom we discover by abiding in the Word. Many today are into meditation, but biblical meditation is quite different and much simpler. Here are two ways you might try this in your day: - First, take a verse that speaks to your heart and life. Write it down somewhere or memorize it. Keep coming back to it all day long. As Psalm 119:11 says, “I have stored up your word in my heart.” - Second, you might pray over the verse you have chosen. Let the vocabulary of the verse shape your prayer life as you go about your day. In this way you will abide or remain in the Word all day long. The practices of prayer, meditation, and Bible study are like the roots of a tree. They are hidden and unseen, yet vital to the life of the disciple. Psalm 1 describes the results: You will be like a tree, “planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, [you prosper]” (verse 3). An apple tree bears apples not for itself but for the delight of others. So, too, the fruit we bear will bless those around us. We will remain strong and courageous in times of trouble. We will prosper, enjoying the abundant life Jesus died to win for us. Prayer: Jesus, teach me to send down deep roots, delighting in you and in . . .
