Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. - John 8:12 [I have gone to the same dentist for 43 years. In all that time, the same picture has hung in his waiting room. It is a picture with many complicated designs and colors that contains a hidden image, in this case, the image of fighter jets. Try as I may, I have never seen them. My problem is that I am color blind. My eyes cannot discern the colors that would make it possible for me to spot those jets.]( [Color blindness is one thing, but something far worse and much more dangerous is the spiritual blindness that comes from being enslaved to sin.]( [How does one become enslaved? Consider Jesus’ audience in John 8. When Jesus promises to free them, their reaction is one of denial: “We are offspring of Abraham” they say, “and have never been enslaved to anyone” (John 8:33). How blind they are! Throughout history, their ancestors had been in captivity to one nation after another.]( [This is the way sin works. First, it blinds us to who we are. Then, it deceives us into desiring something other than Jesus and a relationship with him. All this is rooted in the lies of Satan.]( [Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe. They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News. They don’t understand this message about the glory of Christ. - 2 Corinthians 4:4 NLT]( [Spiritually blind, we live in slavery, carrying a sentence of eternal condemnation before God. Our lives echo those of Paul as he wrote, “I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing” (Romans 7:19).]( [Sin enslaves, but Jesus frees us! He promises, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32). What is this truth? Jesus himself! He is “the way, and the truth, and the life” (John 14:6).]( [When our eyes are opened to the truth of what Jesus has done for us and what he suffered in our place, we are freed to live for him, to do the good we want to do, to avoid the evil that will surely destroy us.
