In New England, we bank mental snapshots of ocean waves disapearing on the horizon to carry us through the long and harsh winter ahead. But for those who make their living off the seas, the ocean is not a place of seasonal respite, it is a source of livelihood. This summer, Monitor science writer Eva Botkin-Kowacki has offered those of us with our feet firmly grounded on land several glimpses into the lives of New England's iconic fishermen. In June, she took us out [into the Gulf of Maine aboard the Pull n’ Pray]( a lobster boat captained by Justin Papkee. Her story offered a window into Mr. Papkee’s way of life and the environmental ethic that is shared by Maine’s lobstermen. In August, she brought us out into the waters off of Cape Cod, where she talked with fishermen who are [struggling to adapt to a loss of the Cape’s namesake fish](. This week, Eva once again pulled us land lubbers out to sea, this time posing the question, can offshore wind and commercial fishing coexist? These are issues that impact not just fishermen but also the economic viability of coastal communities – not to mention seafood lovers all over the United States. I hope you enjoy Eva’s latest dispatch below. And as a bonus, this newsletter includes another coastal story from the Gulf Coast of Florida, where a surge of red tide is wreaking havoc on the marine ecosystem, fishing communities, and the tourist industry. Can offshore wind and commercial fishing coexist? New industries have a way of edging out old ones. As a fledgling offshore wind industry surges to life off New England's coast, fishermen and developers are searching for ways to share the sea.
