Plus, ’tis the season for layoffs? December 4, 2023 Hi, {NAME}. With housing affordability in the U.S. at a historical low, we can’t help but wonder: Whatever happened to all of those 3D-printed backyard cottages we were promised? Perhaps not surprisingly, startups working on more affordable ways to build new housing are struggling to raise funding. But we also find that even with funding down sharply in recent years, [we are still seeing some investment around the affordable housing theme](. There were [plenty of compelling-sounding business models in the mix]( from high-tech construction robots to mass-produced backyard cottages. Some were even rolling out 3D-printed houses. Then again, we could be in for some surprises in the last few weeks of the year. ✂️ [’Tis the season for layoffs if you work at these companies]( Last week wasn’t a good one to work at a company that started with the letter V. Employees at cloud computing company [VMware]( as well as prefab home startup [Veev]( were among those hardest hit by layoffs. Other tech companies conducting layoffs included an enterprise AI provider and a big data unicorn. Here’s why one investor says you should not only have a U.S. office, but also center your life in the U.S. 💰 [These startups raised big last month]( No, last month’s largest funding raise by a U.S. startup — a $1.3 billion deal — wasn’t by a hot new AI startup, but rather the beleaguered e-cigarette maker [Juul](. Things got more interesting from there, though, with space tech, 3D printing and industrial manufacturing among the other large funding deals in November.
