Plus, big deals — and layoffs — abound November 6, 2023 Hi, {NAME}. It can be difficult to say what, exactly, is going on with the venture market right now. On the one hand, [global venture funding last month clocked in even lower than the already-subdued monthly averages for 2023]( our data shows. On the other hand, [last week again saw a bevy of big venture deals]( go to companies working on everything from aerospace to next-generation motors. And of course, [SBF]( guilty verdict — almost exactly a year after his cryptocurrency exchange [FTX]( collapsed spectacularly — [marks another major turning point for the startup world](. Let’s dive in. 📊 [Global VC funding has another ho-hum month]( Global venture funding totaled $21 billion in October — a few billion dollars below the average 2023 monthly funding amount to date — [Crunchbase]( data shows, and down almost a quarter from the same month a year ago. Consider too that last month’s total global startup funding was less than one-third the monthly totals during the heyday months of 2021. 🏅 [Big rounds abound in busy venture week]( From an aerospace and defense startup to a company making the next generation of motors, last week was a strong week for big rounds. Five U.S. startups raised nine-figure rounds and another fell just $1 million short of that threshold. The verdict came just about a year after FTX’s epic fall from grace rattled the markets. It also seems to have helped torpedo funding to the crypto sector, [Crunchbase data]( shows. While the move is the latest blow to the self-driving car sector, an analysis of [Crunchbase data]( shows investors lost their enthusiasm for autonomous vehicles some time ago.
