The “Missing” BIG Ballantyne Lesson of 2023

A few weeks ago, I filmed an epic podcast about how last year was one of the best years of my life… And I shared a ton of valuable lessons I learned in 2023. But AFTER that video went out... Michelle and Isabella taught me one more big lesson that I also wanted to share with you. This lesson reminded me of the book, Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters… Which was probably the most recommended book to me once I became a girl dad. It’s very good. A little too early to apply much to my girl’s lives now… But mandatory reading, especially for men like Coach Daniel, whose oldest child is entering her very influential years. I have several friends who are strong fathers with strong daughters. Bedros. Tim Grover. And Coach Galel. Galel is an inspiring man — as you might have heard on our podcast, he went through rough times during the financial crisis of 2008. But he turned his life around and got his act together in time to be a strong father as his daughter Lily and today she is an amazing young woman excelling in school and the arts. Galel is like a wise brother to Daniel and I… A few years ahead of us with his daughter, and teaching us how to be the strong man our girls need. Thank you Galel! Now back to the lesson that Michelle and Isabella taught me… that should have gone in my “best of 2023” video review One of the biggest messages of Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters, is that you – as a man – are the role model for how your daughter should interact with men in the future. You need to be living at the highest standards, so that your daughter will demand the best – because she deserves the best. Also, the way a man treats his wife in front of his daughters (and sons, too) leaves a powerful psychological impact on children. A man who disrespects his wife teaches his daughter to allow others to disrespect her. Clearly that would be a huge mistake. A man who treats his wife with respect… shows her love and affection in front of his daughter promotes “positive and resilient children,” according to Dr. Joanne Stern, author of Parenting is a Contact Sport. Your daughters – and sons – will be shown examples of healthy relationships and model their own future relationships on what they see in the home. “Behaviors are caught, not taught,” a friend told me years ago. And I can now attest to that truth. The other day Michelle and I kissed and hugged in front of Isabella… I didn’t realize our daughter was watching, but when we turned and noticed her you could see her face light up. “Mama y Papa se aman,” she must have thought (“Mama and Papa love each other.”) (Isabella’s vocabulary is 80% Spanish.) So the big lesson is to show more affection in front of Isabella and Sofia. One of the good habits for Papa Ballantyne to follow in 2024 – very easy to do when you have a wife as beautiful as mine!
