Most people don't realize it... But building a multimillion-dollar business has a LOT of similaritie

Most people don't realize it... But building a multimillion-dollar business has a LOT of similarities to building a championship sports team. In fact, if you look at the biggest winners in both sports and business… You’ll start to notice certain traits, habits, and strategies that show up over and over again. So today I’m sharing 7 lessons from some of the most successful sports teams of all time… To help your business stack more wins in 2024. #1 – Talent Development One of the greatest football coaches ever is Alabama’s Nick Saban... Why – because he’s also the best recruiter and developer of talent. This is one of the most underrated aspects of entrepreneurship... Recruiting. Hiring. Onboarding. Training. And it’s also one of the hardest and most annoying... Who wants to interview people, then take time out from your already packed schedule and onboard them properly into your mission and culture, and then train them to do something that you can probably do better than them (at least for the first few months)? The answer is ... WINNERS, that’s who. It’s not optional if you want to grow. But most businesses choose to struggle because they “accept who they have”... Or because the entrepreneur says those 5 deadly words, “I Will Do It Myself.” But you must banish the IWDIM disease from your mind. If you don’t, then your business won’t grow, and... You’ll get frustrated. And your team members will get frustrated. Then you’ll start to stall... and your team members will start wanting a trade (i.e. to quit). So look at what Saban and his peers (like Jim Harbaugh) are doing nearly every day... They are out there working the phones and working just as hard at recruiting future talent as they are coaching the current talent. These guys literally travel across the country and beg teenagers to join their teams. Likewise... “CEO’s are berserk about great talent,” the author Tom Peters says. And yet you think you’ll find superstars on Craigslist? You have to try harder. #2 – Coaching & Accountability We’ve all had coaches, instructors, mentors, and teachers that “knew their stuff”, but that didn’t have that deep of an impact... The missing link that separates GREAT coaches – dynasty builders like the legendary John Wooden – from people that win once (through a combination of luck and talent) comes down to one world => Accountability. If you want to be a great performer, you must be accountable to someone you deeply do not want to disappoint! And if you want to be a great leader... You must inspire people on your team so that - They look up to you - They never want to disappoint you - And they are willing to do whatever it takes to get a great job done If your team isn’t doing its job... Then it’s on YOU... not on them... It’s not their fault, it’s your fault for not being a better leader. #3 – Playbooks Frank Den Blanken, one of the most successful people to ever attend one of my Perfect Life Workshop sessions, builds Playbooks for his team so they can become high performers fast. Heck, my Perfect Life Workshops are the Playbook to building your Dream Life (which is why it worked so well for Frank). Playbooks are simply another way for saying “systems.” When you have systems (playbooks), your business generates consistent results. But average businesses don’t have a playbook... instead, they make stuff up on the go. Your biz needs playbooks to: - Generate leads - Sell your products / services - Deliver your products & services - Grow and develop your team members - Keep customers happy... but also to deal with unhappy customers - And even to manage your money after you’ve made it If you don’t have playbooks (or systems), start building them now. And if you have them, build a playbook to make them better! #4 – Practice & Execution Vince Lombardi, the legendary coach of the Green Bay Packers, was famous for his Power Sweep, a play his teams used over and over and over every game. Lombardi and his teams practiced the play thousands of times to perfection. The opposition knew it was coming ... but were powerless to stop. “There can never be enough emphasis on repetition,” Lombardi said. “I want my players to be able to run this sweep in their sleep. If we call the sweep twenty times, I'll expect it to work twenty times...not eighteen, not nineteen...” “It's my number one play,” Lombardi said, “because it requires all eleven men to play as one to make it succeed, and that's what 'team' means." Now look at your business. What “play” drives the revenue? How much practice time does it get? Our team practices sales calls every Monday for one hour together. All of my sales team is also registered with Joe Marcoux in his sales DoJoe program where they drill on overcoming objections for an hour a week. Plus, my marketing team is focused on generating as many calls as possible so that my guys get as many “sales snaps” as possible to run our sales power sweep. That’s why we add new coaching clients every single day. Now take a look at your sales process. Are you practicing to perfection enough? If not, change it! #5 – The RTD Factor (Resilience, Toughness, and Discipline) “Are you going to let the obstacles in your life be stumbling blocks or stepping stones? Choose the positive. You are the master of your attitude.” – Bruce Lee You should know by now that one of my favorite books of all time is Relentless by Tim Grover. In it he chronicles the resilience, toughness, and discipline that formed the championship mindset of his top clients, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and Dwayne Wade. What they did, how they prepared, and how they thought about performance and preparation – and dealing with setbacks – will get you so fired up that you’ll want to run through a wall in order to overcome all of your obstacles. They turned adversity into advantage and the bitter into better. You have the same choice. Business is not easy. Every single day comes with highs and lows. While one email announces a big sale... the next might contain the threat of a lawsuit. If you quit after one punch to the face then this ain’t the game for you! That’s business! And to get through those obstacles you need discipline. You need structure in your day, your morning, your preparation, your playbook building, your determination to practice when you’d rather be relaxing... Structure = Freedom Discipline = Victory #6 – Keep Score Why are sports so addictive? It’s not the beauty of human performance... It’s the drama around the score... the determination of the winners and losers. Great businesses keep score... They track their numbers... They know if they are winning and losing... And this is done through KPI’s for team members and departments... But also... Great leaders make sure the team knows the score. “The numbers don’t lie!” Rick Crossland said. “Get your team focused on what the score is both on a lead measure perspective and a lag measure basis.” In our business, I reveal all the numbers... Revenue week-over-week, month-by-month, etc. I tell the team when we’re up and when we’re down... They know how much we make... I don’t hide that like some businesses It encourages responsibility – and teamwork.   #7 – Culture & Innovation Management guru Peter Drucker once said, “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.” That means even the best strategic plan will be held back by a team of underperformers. For example, Bruce Arians, head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, could call the greatest plays in the world... But if Craig Ballantyne is in at Quarterback, we’re in trouble. However, Craig Ballantyne could be calling the plays... and have a chance of winning if Tom Brady is throwing the ball. You get it? Culture wins. How do you build better culture? Leadership. Your team’s chance of winning is all on you. Start applying these ideas in your business and I’m confident you’ll see a nice boost in your Q1 results. Let me know how it goes!
