When things aren’t going your way in business or life in general… It can be easy to slip into negativity and self-doubt. But keeping a winner’s mindset while navigating through life’s challenges is what separates successful people from everyone else. Of course, that’s easier said than done. Below is a coaching convo I had with a client that will help you get through “the muck”: Client: Craig, yesterday I hit an unproductive patch with a ton of negative self-talk. Things like “how are we going to pay for ‘x’? You’ll never be able to do it.” … and…  “You are a fake, why do you think you should be able to hang out with entrepreneurs in [Group], you’re not successful like them.” … “You keep failing, you are broken, your forum will kick you out, Craig will get sick of you, there’s something wrong with you that can’t be fixed.” I don’t stay stuck in this negative self-talk, which is an improvement over the old me. But it can still be loud. Yesterday I felt trapped indoors on a nice day. I hit some mental quicksand, I didn’t give myself permission to go for a long break. Or conversely, I didn’t focus on accomplishing one small thing at a time to rebuild momentum. CB’s REPLY: Next time this happens I want you to change your physical state. When you change your physical state you can change your mental state... And you must schedule this into breaks on busy days. On days when I know I'll be stuck inside, down in the dark new basement office of our short-term rental, I get outside as early as possible in the morning. And I workout every day before lunch. It’s also helpful to say “NO” to a packed schedule… And to shorten the length of your meetings… Reduce the number of meetings you have… And find as many 5-minute and 10-minute windows that allow you to pop outside. And YES, you must go outside and get a physical state change even if it’s raining or cold. Also, try the following when you go outside or when you are stuck inside and need to change your state: ︎ - Inhale through the nose with a short, sharp inhalation followed directly by a long, strong inhale…  ︎ - Then without pausing, exhale through the nose and mouth with a short, then long exhale︎… - Repeat 5 times then pause for a short break before beginning your next round. Finally, REFRAME everything. Instead of… “You are a fake, why do you think you should be able to hang out with entrepreneurs in [Group], you’re not successful like them” REFRAME AS… "Our revenue is exactly the same as the average [Group] member revenue… Which means half the people in my group are less successful than me, and I must mentor them up by sharing my knowledge that they don't have yet — and provide a good example of not quitting when challenges arise." I also encourage all clients to read this quick book on how to fix your mindset… The book is called "Reframe Your Brain" by Scott Adams, the Dilbert cartoonist. ****** Reframing is a powerful tool to break free from negativity… And maintain your winner’s edge. It’s worked wonders for me… And if you give it a shot, I know it can help you too. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables.
