Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ latest attacks on the education system have earned him a ton of

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ latest attacks on the education system have earned him a ton of media coverage… but not in the ways you might expect. [Courier Newsroom]( He hasn’t declared anything publicly yet, but all signs point to an inevitable Presidential run for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. To win the nomination, DeSantis is using Florida’s schools and kids to wage the kind of culture war he thinks will appeal to base voters in the Republican primary. That strategy includes getting rid of diversity, equity and inclusion programs, blocking so-called “critical race theory” from colleges, and even pushing for changes to required high school sports forms that ask students to share their menstrual history. Seriously… The mainstream media coverage of DeSantis’ cynical fear mongering has been disheartening to say the least: Instead of exposing DeSantis’ divisive fear mongering, outlets like the New York Times and CNN have covered his extreme policies as if educational policy was just a political game. Instead of covering, oh, we don’t know, the impact of these extreme policies on our kids and local communities… This gap between covering the impact of national and local news couldn’t be more stark. Just take a look at our own newsroom, Floricua: And here’s the really good news: Floricua is just one of our eight local newsrooms currently reporting trustworthy journalism in states and communities where local news has nearly gone away. Covering stories like these is at the core of what we do, but to contend with the mainstream media we need the resources to ensure our coverage is freely available to anyone who wants it. [Because we don’t hide our content behind paywalls, we depend on the grassroots support of folks like you.
