Someone has to step up and cover Trump as the dictator he wants to be [Courier]( Friend, this is urgent. Donald Trump is doubling down on his calls to jail his political enemies. This past weekend, Trump shared posts on Truth Social that advocated for his political opponents to be tried for treason in “televised military tribunals.” See for yourself: [We’ll get into Trump’s alarming increase in authoritarian rhetoric in a second, but if you support COURIER’s mission to protect democracy and stand up to right-wing hate, can you chip in $20 now?]( This isn’t the first time Trump has made dangerous, fascist threats about his second term. Remember the Time interview from earlier this year, friend? Trump suggested there might be political violence if he lost in November. Trump has also repeatedly called for retribution against his political enemies if he wins. He even echoed Hitler at a recent rally, calling his rivals “vermin.” And the media? They’re sleepwalking right into Trump’s authoritarianism. While Trump allies at Fox News cheerlead and amplify Trump, legacy media outlets like CNN and the New York Times keep covering Trump like he’s any other candidate. Take the debate coverage from last week. CNN, who hosted the debate, decided against any live fact-checking or moderator pushback during the debate. Predictably, Trump responded by lying dozens of times. The New York Times is continuing its all-out effort to get Joe Biden to drop out, reiterating its call for Biden to withdraw from 2024 while giving Trump (and the Republican Party as a whole) a pass on Trump’s criminal convictions and his authoritarian threats. COURIER was founded in 2019 because we reject the outdated “both sides” journalism model that has helped normalize Trump and his MAGA supporters. We publish factual, fearless coverage to protect democracy and educate voters on what’s happening in their communities. We will never, ever compromise these values just to turn a profit.
