Trump has always courted and fueled support from Q-Anon followers. Lately, he’s taking it to a whole new level. [Courier]( Friend, Following the news that Trump would have to pony up $450 million for his civil fraud trial, the former president went on a merch-hawking spree: sneakers, cologne, and now, a special-edition Bible. While some of Trump’s most rabid supporters have criticized Trump as sacrilegious for profiting from the Bible, many more have praised Trump for the move. [We’ll tell you why so many in Trump’s support base are snatching up his bibles in a minute, but if you’re ready to support COURIER’s essential coverage now, can you chip in $10?]( Many of Trump’s biggest supporters believe in the Q-Anon conspiracy that God anointed Trump to bring about an end to the “satanic” Deep State run by President Biden and fellow Democrats. And while Trump has always courted and fueled support from Q-Anon followers, lately, he’s taking it to a whole new level. For example, prayer sessions at recent rallies often include references to Trump being God’s chosen leader to take down the Deep State. When Trump leaves the stage, he exits to a song that is all but identical to the Q-Anon theme music. And now he’s trying to further burnish his religious cred by selling bibles to his supporters. Most distressingly, Trump’s message mirrors the apocalyptic rhetoric found in both Q-Anon and far-right Christian fundamentalism. Look, we don’t have to speculate about the impact Trump’s hateful, paranoid rhetoric will have on our democracy – we already saw it play out on January 6th when Q-Anon supporters and conspiracy theorists attacked our capitol after they were told Democrats had stolen the 2020 election. COURIER exists to stop these conspiracies before they spread. We provide unbiased coverage of the most critical local issues, and we have no problem calling Trump what he is: a totalitarian autocrat hell-bent on getting and keeping power, no matter the costs for American democracy. We do that by meeting people in the spaces where they get their news – in the email inboxes and social media feeds where dangerous misinformation thrives.
