The following year, seven CEOs of the largest tobacco corporations stood before Congress under the hot glare of TV cameras and the intense scrutiny of the U.S. public. One after another, these executives swore that they didn’t believe nicotine was addictive. And all seven of them were lying. In the three decades since, we and other allied organizations have successfully exposed the tobacco industry’s long trail of lies and deception. And now, Big Tobacco can no longer operate with impunity. There are strict guidelines as to when and how Big Tobacco can market and promote their products. [We and our allies waged a historic campaign to secure the global tobacco treaty, which is instrumental in curbing the industry’s abuses worldwide.]( And a vast majority of establishments are now smoke-free. Not only has our tobacco campaign set a roadmap for the larger corporate accountability movement, it has also proven that it is possible to kick corporations out and make them pay. And as we celebrate the 30-year anniversary of this precedent-setting campaign, we’re feeling more energized than ever to keep challenging corporate abuse in all its forms. Your steadfast support is making it possible for us to achieve significant progress when it comes to protecting people and the planet. Here is everything you made happen in the month of May: Making big tobacco pay for decades of abuse [Graphic exposing Philip Morris International's lies](With more than eight million people still dying of tobacco-related illnesses each year, we know that the costs of the industry’s drive to addict new customers to its products is staggering. Which is why, despite our decades of success, our tobacco campaign continues to be as vital and important as it was 30 years ago. And this past May, we continued exposing Big Tobacco’s decades of deception directly at Philip Morris International’s (PMI) annual shareholders’ meeting. [Hear about what happened from our Deputy Campaigns Director Keltie Vance.]( MOBILIZING THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE for justice in flint [A protestor holding a sign that says "Justice for Flint" at a rally against Veolia](On April 25th, we and our partners marked the 10-year anniversary of the start of Flint’s water crisis with a robust day of action. Together, we amplified the demands of Flint residents and mobilized pressure against private water corporation Veolia for the role it played in the ongoing crisis. And from Boston to Pittsburgh to New Orleans, thousands of people like you came together to flood the phonelines and inboxes of Veolia’s executives on the day of its annual shareholders’ meeting. It’s far past time the people of Flint get justice for 10 years of poisoned water. [Read more about the day of action in this blog post!]( Supporting our allies in launching the map of false solutions to the climate crisis in latin america [An illustration of three people tending to the Earth and surrounded by the rays of sunshine](A year ago, two coalitions of Latin American and Caribbean allies, which Corporate Accountability is a member of, joined forces to challenge false solutions within the region. And after months of research and campaigning, we finally supported our partners with the launch of the map of false solutions to the climate crisis in April. With information in [English]( and [Spanish,]( this map will be an important tool for global climate justice organizing, providing resources for those seeking to understand false solutions in the Latin American region and pulling back the veil on corporate-speak. Thank you for all you are making possible! We are building a world rooted in justice where corporations answer to people, not the other way around -- a world where every person has access to clean water, healthy food, a safe place to live, and the opportunity to reach their full human potential. [State Disclosures.]( Write to us at info@corporateaccountability.org or call us at +1-800-688-8797 (U.S.).
