What followed was a series of government failures and corporate abuse that led to prolonged lead and bacteria contamination in the water. The people of Flint have been living with the impacts of these decisions since. From former Governor Rick Snyder, whose anti-democratic emergency management system led to the crisis, to the private water corporation Veolia, which told the city its water was safe despite privately acknowledging the potential for lead contamination1, far too many have escaped accountability for their roles in the crisis so far. [Meanwhile, and most importantly, the people of Flint still don’t have access to safe, reliable drinking water.]( And a federal judge recently found the city in contempt of court for its failure to replace lead pipes. Flint residents continue to pay the price with their physical health, emotional well-being, and pocketbooks. Justice delayed cannot become justice denied.
