And while I pride myself on getting a few things right in those first couple of years… I definitely made some BIG mistakes that could have been avoided [if I had a roadmap to follow](. Some of them were so cringe too 🙈 Like… Way under-pricing a sales page that took me weeks to write (what was I thinking?!) Way over-quoting for a project despite having no experience (yeah, that proposal was denied hard)... Forgetting to put the correct currency on a big client contract (which cost me thousands of dollars due to a less than favorable exchange rate)... And people-pleasing so damn hard that I let clients massively push my boundaries (sure, I’ll run your Facebook ads, edit your videos and wash your floor too). 🤣 While some mistakes are bound to happen no matter what… A LOT of them can be avoided when you’ve got [a plan, a mentor and a community]( to ask for support. Like this question that one of my Posse members asked me a few weeks ago… "Alex, if you were to start fresh, how would you structure your first 3-6 months to hit $10K as quickly as possible?" Honestly, {NAME}, here’s what I would do... I’d put as many irons in the fire as possible and say YES to everything in the beginning. I would not worry so about finding the "perfect" client, the "dream" niche or the "ideal" paycheck at first… I’d get my feet dirty and take messy action. I’d write for friends' businesses… I’d donate my copywriting services to the local dog shelter… I’d look for local businesses who needed my help – and then I’d offer to help. "Oh, you’re a plumber and need help with your website? I’m your girl!" One of the biggest mistakes new copywriters make is waiting to take action… Either because they feel like they "aren’t ready yet"... Or they assume they need more experience before they can call themselves a "copywriter"... Or they’re holding out for their "dream client"... Meanwhile, other opportunities to gain experience and get paid pass them by, and they make no progress. That is a HUGE problem… No matter what, you have to start somewhere, so why not start with brands you don’t have some desperate attachment to? I mean, we all know the smell of desperation, {NAME}... And it ain’t good 🤣 But saying YES to everything in the beginning is not JUST about getting hired and growing your portfolio as quickly as possible… It’s about building your experience, resilience and skills as a business owner… And when you have a [proven action plan]( to follow, you’ll go from brand new to fully booked faster than you think.
