I recently received a comment on one of my YouTube videos titled: [How to Make Money as a Freelance Writer](=). A couple interesting things here. First, I posted the video almost three years ago, so it's a good example of how content can reach and potentially help new people long after the topic is "new" to you, the content creator. The video is about 20 minutes long and full of timeless advice. Second, the question the viewer asked in the comment is one of my favorites. Here it is: [So, I'm a freelance writer looking for work. When you say to blog, what sort of subjects would I blog about?] Based on your experience as a freelance writer, what kind of guidance would you provide? [Comments are open on the video](=), so feel free to reply! My response to the question is at the end of this email. :-) --------------------------------------------------------------- Unconventional Business Tips That Made Millions = On this episode of The Copyblogger Podcast, Tim Stoddart and Ethan Brooks dissect one of Tim’s tweets. You might get a lot of positive feedback on your writing. And you might have even picked up many great writing gigs over the years, solidifying your status as a professional writer. But something is missing. It’s difficult to balance writing for your existing clients and attracting new clients. Consequently, your writing income varies at different times throughout the year and the work you love to do never quite feels sustainable. Whether you’re just starting your writing business, or you’ve been building it for a while and are hoping to make it more financially secure, I have 15 tips that support a healthy, productive solopreneur venture. The success of a writing business depends on so much more than your ability to write. Educating yourself on the business of writing and content marketing gives you a huge advantage over other (directionless) writers. [Click here to read the article](). --------------------------------------------------------------- Your Blog Showcases Your Subject-Matter Expertise A blog is a tool that can help a freelance writer build their service business. Here's my response to the question I displayed at the beginning of this email: "Freelance writers can think of their blogs as writing portfolios that display their subject-matter expertise. A blog is a great place to display the type of writing that you'd like to get hired to do. "When a potential client finds your website on their own, or if you apply for a specific job, your blog posts help demonstrate that you're the best person for the type of writing they need. "For example, if a freelance writer's subject-matter expertise is gardening and they are looking for writing work in that niche, they could use their blog to display both their gardening knowledge and writing skills."
