🌐 How to blue-collar the network state

(Srinivasan was the former CTO of Coinbase and a former general partner at Andreesen Horowitz, too.) [Screenshot 2023-11-09 at 6.11.57 PM-min] Okay, but why did he invite Codie “Boring Business” Sanchez, best known for investing in laundromats and car washes (that are mostly run by 65-year-olds who probably think “crypto” is a Dan Brown book)… to speak at a conference about global technological decentralization? How do small business ownership or blue-collar work have anything to do with decentralization and open-sourcing? It may be surprising, but they actually have a lot in common… I spent 15 years in investment banking, asset management, and private equity. Finance is an industry heavily centralized on Wall Street, which I was told was where the best go to work for others to make more money than everyone else. But as it turns out, that’s not always right. There’s a clear asymmetric upside potential to business ownership. You get an expensive degree, work your way up the ranks, and keep secret the lessons you learn, lining your pockets the whole time. There’s no “spreading the wealth” in the form of knowledge. “What we do here is get rich quietly,” a private equity CEO once told me. That didn’t sit right with me, and it’s why I’m so public about my work now. My hope is as more humans learn acquisitions, we decentralize business ownership. We cut out the big guys altogether. We become the bank (seller financing), the brokers (referrals), and the PE firms (buyers). So this brings me back to the network state event. If we’re going to achieve a decentralized world, we’ll need big brains. But we’ll need more than that. We’ll also the business owners, the operators, their dirty fingernails, and their calloused hands. [divider-min] To own, we need to simplify… I’m a capitalist, to the max. It’s exactly why I believe so strongly in simplifying acquisitions for the many. At its core, our movement is built around decoding the language of business buying for everyday people, and I think if the network state community wants to succeed, they’ll need to simplify their language, too. The folks at this conference get some hate for their unusual ideas and sometimes complex visions for the future. I can relate. But what if the people who are actually most open to their unusual ideas today, the people who are the most aligned with their beliefs about ownership, are the same people being left behind by them because the ideas are simply out of reach? I’m talking, of course, about small business owners and the blue-collar world. Take, for example, my small-business-owning parents. They’re your prototypical 65-year-olds who play on Main Street. I had them scroll through a bunch of Twitter accounts related to “network states” and had them write down all the words they didn’t understand. There were many. [Screenshot 2023-11-09 at 11.30.53 AM-min] Honestly, I think they’d probably find a lot of ideas in this space interesting, and maybe even relatable or useful. But I think their brains exploded seeing some of this stuff… Broadly speaking, where’s the effort to communicate these ideas to the electricians and plumbers of the world who don’t even understand Twitter bios? Or the small business owners who probably value decentralized ownership more than anyone? You can’t build a “state” without these people, without the blue-collar world. The network state winners will be the ones who communicate their vision and value in simple terms to those who do the real-world building. We use a saying in our investment team: "Do you want to look smart, or do you want to win?" If you’re really smart, you know that the most intelligent people actually speak the simplest and the clearest, not with the most complexity. This will be vital to the network state movement. When people don’t understand something, they by and large are fearful of it. To get buy-in on new ideas, you have to explain them clearly. I’ll leave you with my top 10 takeaways here… - Your network will either shrink or expand your thinking. In some rooms, you can get away with thinking small. If you feel stuck, find a new room. Take care not to stay confined too long, atrophy starts fast. - Short, simple talks create better ideas. The entire conference demanded 5-10 minute speeches from 40 speakers. The ideas were better without all the fluff and credentialing. Show, don’t tell. - The next generation is SMART. I used to be frustrated with my parents for not understanding their phones. Then I began hearing about Kardashev scales, computational breakthroughs, & how to operate a 21st virus filter. Humbling. We’ll be tech-obsolete faster than our parents. - Intelligence does not care about logos. The smartest people you meet (often the richest) do not wear it on their sleeve. Confidence and intelligence wear better. Intelligent people judge based on content, not wrappers. - Free thinkers are rare but easy to spot. Very few people come up with truly novel ideas that make you pause. How you can notice them: They’re willing to bat ideas around, and they argue not to “win,” but to find what is right. Unbounded curiosity... Aspire to this. - Every movement starts with insider language. To create a new vision of the world, you need to define it. I analyzed a group of e/acc accounts and found ~75 words I couldn’t define. This shared language allows them to redefine the ways we think about the world. - Divergent thinking stimulates new ideas. The Network State’s rapid-fire, disparate talks stimulated new ideas & solutions that a typical linear conference may not have. - The future is here but unevenly distributed. After 1 Network State event, you can see: Charter cities already in effect, parallel establishments across sectors, and open-sourced AI & tech from those who think lifespans will eventually be endless. - Pull the string on government overreach and it’ll scare the hell out of you. I spoke to a crypto trader, a VR city simulator, a techno journalist, an AI open-source coder, and a charter city founder. The common thread? Governments do not like when strings that bind you to them are cut. - Countries may look different in 20 years. I’m a very proud American. But I wonder if that phrase will change for the next generation. Five of ten people I met had 2+ passports. One company discussed passport benefit stacking.
