Laura served as a Naval nurse for four years and Bill served for over 24 years, first as an officer and then as a professor at the Naval Academy in Annapolis. A former avid runner and marathoner, Bill was diagnosed with a rare congenital defect to his spine. He underwent surgery and was devastatingly left paraplegic. The family has since acquired a multitude of medical supplies, including walkers and wheelchairs, that are necessary for Bill to go about his activities of daily living.
