[Consumer Reports]   Dear Friend, It may not shock you that Consumer Reports’ new analysis of the top 10 risky recalled foods include bagged salad, poultry and ground beef. But what if we told you that other common foods made the list – including peaches, uncooked flour and raw onions? With nearly 130,000 people hospitalized and 3,000 dying each year from foodborne illness, our new findings underscore the need for a strong food safety watchdog. Yet the Food and Drug Administration stubbornly clings to a fragmented, ineffective structure that contributed to debacles like the botched infant formula crisis – even ignoring a recommendation from an independent expert panel to create a strong food safety leader who can quickly target these risky foods. [It’s time the FDA cleans up its own act, and creates the strong food safety watchdog consumers deserve!]( Sign our petition to the FDA Commissioner to act now – no one should worry about getting seriously ill or dying from food in the United States. [Sign the Petition]( CR analyzed data on recalls and disease outbreaks over the past five years on widely consumed foods, looking mainly at how many people died or became ill, as well as how many times a food was recalled. The riskiest food was leafy greens – with 50 different recalls of more than 4.3 million cases of product. Those incidents led to 11 people dying and 614 serious illnesses. Rounding out the expected list of foods involved in recalls were poultry, ground beef and deli meats/cheeses. But also landing on the list were onions, papayas, peaches, melons and uncooked flour. Consumer Reports isn’t saying to avoid these foods entirely – some risk can be mitigated by proper cooking and cleaning techniques. But the FDA has to do more to prevent foodborne illness. In 2021, the FDA inspected only 4,535 of the more than 81,000 food facilities in the U.S. – a 60 percent drop in inspections from a decade earlier. With Congress unlikely to give more money to fund inspections, it’s critical the FDA focus its efforts on the riskiest foods, such as those involved in our Top 10 list.
