NOTE: If you know anyone who may benefit from this letter, kindly forward it to them. Are You Still Trying to Use a Program from 1935 to Solve Addiction? How About Trying a Program from this Century? Dear Friends, It’s difficult to fathom why addiction treatment providers are still using a program developed in 1935 by a traveling salesman who was destitute and seeking to get rich, but they are. Did you know that addiction treatment around the world is based on the 12 step program Alcoholics Anonymous? AA Founder, William Wilson (Bill Wilson) called alcoholism a spiritual malady, then set about trying to convince the masses that it was a disease that rendered people forever powerless over alcohol. [The 12 Step Program he founded incorporated steps for a religious conversion used by a religious cult called the Oxford Group.]( Wilson touted that alcoholism was a disease that required full ego deflation and that the individual must turn his/her life over to God to manage. His program relied on “one alcoholic helping another” and his book flagrantly overinflates their early success which is estimated to be well below 10%. While Wilson was not a mental health professional, physician, or even clergy, he was clearly a brilliant salesperson and marketer as he created a cultural phenomenon that has led to a $40 Billion industry in the US alone. And he did this with no actual supporting research, data, or evidence that what he claimed was true. As a matter of fact the vast majority of credible research done to date refutes AA’s primary premise that people lose control of their substance intake. If you are your loved one have tried to solve your substance use problem and failed, perhaps it’s time to try a program created in this century that was built on credible research and 30 years of experience helping people to solve their addiction and move on with their lives. You may have been told in treatment or support group meetings that the best you can ever hope for is a daily reprieve from using alcohol and drugs, and that no matter how long you remain abstinent, each day will be a new battle with your “disease” called addiction.
