Music, news, and ramblings direct from the Pigeons & Planes team. Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Next Wave. We took a little break but we're back this week with news of our first ever vinyl release. We're also highlighting two great debut singles and answer your burning questions about soundtracks. [Subscribe to the Newsletter](   Our compilation album [See You Next Year]( has been out for almost exactly 2 months and the reception has been incredible. From the very start this project has felt like an important next step in the evolution of Pigeons & Planes, but seeing a full album of original music available to enjoy really brought home how far the brand has come from the early blog days of posting .mp3 download links to the hottest new songs with a one line description. (Shhh, don’t tell legal about our dark past.) Now, we’re working directly with our favorite rising artists and their teams—not to mention legendary producer Mike Dean—on shaping a compilation album and creating IRL experiences like bringing all the artists together to meet in-person and the listening parties in NY and LA. This renewed focus on tangible, memorable moments can also be seen in the return after two years of our No Ceilings live concerts. We’re back with two shows in New York in December, and [Wallice]( who contributed “Mean Girl” to See You Next Year, is headlining one of them. (Kenny Mason headlines the other show, more info and tickets [here]( Streaming or downloading are wonderfully convenient ways of listening to music, but a special vinyl release was essential for See You Next Year, and it's available now. We can’t wait to hold this little piece of music history in our hands and for someone in the distant future to find a strange album cover dotted with pigeons, pull out the record, blow off the dust, and enjoy these songs. The artwork was designed by [Henock “HK” Sileshi]( a preview of the center gatefold below. Plus, exclusive content from the artists on the album will be randomly inserted into the vinyl packaging, including 20 limited edition signed SYNY Rookie Relic Cards This limited edition pressing of See You Next Year is only available until October 21, 2022. [Get See You Next Year on Vinyl](   2 Debut Singles You Need To Hear Everyone in the music industry is looking for a formula—if something works for one artist or one label, you won't have to wait long to see a million copycats trying to replicate the success. Sometimes you need a reminder that there is no single blueprint. This month, that reminder came in the form of two debut singles that we're loving, and their approaches couldn't be any more different. Hemlocke Springs is a 23-year-old North Carolina-based artist whose first release is "gimme all ur luv," an addictive '80s-inspired DIY pop gem gaining momentum on TikTok. Dash George, on the other hand, is barely active on socials but "Joy Ride" is a slick, melancholy introduction from a Florida-raised, Bronx-based newcomer. We put out asks on social media for questions from the readers, and we'll do our best to give advice, guidance, ramblings, and recommendations based on our own experiences.   Dear Pigeons, Thoughts on any show soundtracks? Top 3 off the top? - @pongog I love music, but I love thoughtfully placed music even more. A carefully selected soundtrack that accurately fits the mood of a scene pulls me into that world so much more. As for Top 3, I’m just gonna skip over the more obvious choices (Euphoria, Atlanta, Succession, etc) which we can agree have mastered the art of soundtracking and move to a few (maybe) less popular choices you may have missed. Dark I plug this Netflix show whenever I’m given the chance. Not only is it hands down the best piece of television I’ve ever consumed—yes, I’m serious—it’s also one of the most masterfully soundtracked. Without giving too much away the show always shifts the music perfectly to match whatever era or decade it’s existing within (Although, it's totally not about time travel). The show itself is in German but they include English and German music and atmospheric music including a breathy a capella piece that serves as an unsettling musical motif throughout the show. Soap & Skins' “Me and the Devil” is my personal favorite from the show but they include everyone from Dan Deacon and Agnes Obel to Tears For Fears, Raury, and more. My friends are sick to death of me rambling on about this show and its music, so thanks for the wonderful excuse to share. Big Little Lies This show has a haunting soundtrack, beautiful enough to have 86,152 followers on Spotify. The opening song is Michael Kiwanuka’s eight-minute, room-filling, mesmerizing piece, “Cold Little Heart.” Other contributions include The Cure, Willie Nelson, Sufjan Stevens, The Temptations, Sade, and many others. Westworld The last show I’ll shout out is Westworld and I’m specifically referring to their use of modern songs reimagined as orchestral and piano covers. Usually I find those kinds of covers to be cheesy in a show, but Westworld uses them so beautifully to show the dichotomy between the two worlds in the show. Also, it makes for good background music. —[Sabine Adorney](   [Complex on Instagram]( [Complex on Facebook]( [Complex on Twitter]( [Complex on YouTube]( © Complex Media, Inc.
