Your dose of music discovery from Pigeons and Planes has landed. Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Next Wave. This week, we're listening to Bakar's new album Nobody's Home. We're also answering your burning questions about P&P's goals, keeping plants alive, and more. [Subscribe to the Newsletter]( Bakar has been a P&P favorite ever since his 2018 project Badkid and the Londoner has been on a steady climb ever since, thanks in part to his runaway hit "Hell N Back." After the tremendous popularity of that song, being a fan of Bakar's has led to a bit of a conundrum. On one hand, this is an artist worthy of mass appeal and the world should embrace it. On the flipside, Bakar is at his best when he's a little unhinged or slightly left of center, and that doesn't always correlate with mainstream success. With his new album Nobody's Home, he manages to level up without sacrificing the messy charm that made us fans in the first place. The project thrives in moments of loose unpredictability, but on songs like "NW3," "The Mission," and new favorite "Free," he balances it out with undeniable songwriting and sturdy production. It's the best of both worlds, and strong evidence that not everything has to be watered down to be popular. Read more about Bakar and other artists to watch in 2022 [here]( and listen to "Free" below. Dear Pigeons is our advice column. We put out asks on social media for questions from the readers, and we'll do our best to give advice, guidance, ramblings, and recommendations based on our own experiences. Dear Pigeons, When Pigeons & Planes first started, what was the goal? In the early days of P&P, there was no business plan. It was purely a hobby and an outlet, and the goal was simple: share the music we like. As it grew, we stumbled into the realization that there were a lot of other music fans like us—fans who wanted to hear things early, who wanted to listen to an eclectic mix of music that kept them discovering new worlds regardless of genre, and fans who wanted to celebrate interesting music instead of intellectualizing it. Over 10 years later, we're still trying to figure out the best ways to do that. It started with 10-minute blog posts, and we moved on to interviews, lists, videos, social media posts, radio shows, concerts, and one brief stint doing [comedy skits](. We're still experimenting with new things today, like the [P&P Discord]( or the [Pigeons & Planes compilation album](instagram.com/seeyounextyear) that we promise is coming soon. The goal is the same though, and everyone on this team is still trying to find interesting ways to highlight new artists, talk about good music, and contribute what we can to the conversation. This might sound naive, but I truly believe that if we stick to that and do it well, all the other pieces will fall into place. Even throughout the most dramatic shifts in technology, the media industry, and popular culture in general, there will always be music fans like us. - [Jacob Moore](twitter.com/mAAdycity), Founder/GM, Pigeons and Planes Dear Pigeons, I'm having trouble keep my flowers alive and need tips - @edo_sunny_ via Instagram Time and attention @edo_sunny_, time and attention. DMX's full quote from his brief appearance on the TV show Fresh Off The Boat is, “When I first started growing orchids, I thought they needed the most expensive soil and light to blossom, and they died. That’s when I realized all they really needed was time and attention. You don’t need to give a girl a gift. You need to give you her time.” Good relationship advice, good gardening advice, and a mantra that also resonates for creative pursuits in general. In this era of TikTok hits, overnight viral success, and fleeting hype, it is healthy to remember that great things take time. You don't plant a seed and expect a flower to bloom the very next day. In fact, there might actually be nothing more important than that time and attention you put into whatever you're passionate about, regardless of the end result. Let every dead orchid be a lesson, and let every one that blooms be appreciated in its own right. RIP DMX. - [Alex Gardner]( Director of Strategy & Operations, Pigeons & Planes Dear Pigeons, Did you guys lose your minds when Spotify was down? - @sweeneydawg98 via Instagram I was in the middle of listening to the new Babyface Ray album when I got logged out, specifically "My Thoughts 3 / Pop's Prayer." Tragic. I tried logging back in through Facebook and resetting my password, to no avail. I restarted my phone, threw it out the window, put it in rice, and took it to the Genius Bar. Still nothing. When I ran to Twitter to check if Spotify was down, I saw this tweet from Alex Tumay: Yesterday reminded me that buying music is something I need to do more of, and that there's so many albums I love that I should own on digital or physical. Now is as good a time as any to think about music consumption beyond streaming services. - [Maddy Quach](twitter.com/maadycity), Community Manager, Pigeons & Planes [Complex on Instagram]( [Complex on Facebook]( [Complex on Twitter]( [Complex on YouTube]( © Complex Media, Inc.
