My husband Curt and I with our twin boys I went on to win statewide twice and became the first African American woman to serve as chief justice of North Carolina’s Supreme Court. Now, I’m taking on my toughest race yet: North Carolina’s open U.S. Senate seat. Some have said that running to become the third African American woman ever to serve in the U.S. Senate — and the first African American senator from North Carolina — will be difficult to do. But I’m no stranger to tough fights, and I don’t back down from a challenge.
