# The majority of D.C.âs over 700,00 residents are Black
{NAME}, this is a basic fact, the largest demographic in D.C. is Black. When we talk about D.C. statehood, we are talking about the rights â the voice â of the citizens who live there. So, it is no wonder why Republicans push so hard against D.C. statehood: This is what we are up against in the fight for D.C. statehood. Republican Senators, like Ron Johnson, see it as a âpower grab,â when in reality it is about giving a voice to over 700,000 people. [Add your name to stand up to Republican Senators, like Ron Johnson, and support D.C. statehood >>]( [ADD YOUR NAME]( D.C. statehood is about giving equal representation and access to Black voters. D.C. has a higher population than both Vermont and Wyoming, both of which have the full privileges and representation of being a state. As of right now, D.C. residents: - Lack voting representation in the House
- Have no representation in the Senate
- And yet, they still pay all the same federal taxes as the rest of the country
Ron Johnson thinks D.C. residents donât deserve statehood because they âchoose to live here.â But D.C. isnât all federal employees who move there for work â it is the long-time home of many who grew up there, and they deserve real representation. [Supporting D.C. statehood isnât about a âpower grab,â like Ron Johnson says, itâs about the rights of its over 700,000 residents, the majority of whom are Black.
