GOP lawmakers are trying to ban teaching “critical race theory” in K-12 schools in an effort to ban all talk of race and racism in schools. This is clearly part of their racist agenda to gaslight Black Americans into believing there is no racism in this country. The harsh truth is, our history is full of racism, and we need to both acknowledge and learn about it in order to move forward towards a just and equitable society. Yet, Mitch McConnell and the rest of the GOP would rather put a stop to actual facts about slavery being taught in schools — this is a part of America’s history that, frankly, cannot be ignored. In order for us to ever move towards true justice in our country, we need to be educated on the atrocities of our past, and that begins by learning about our history at a formative age — the good, the bad, and the ugly.
