My mind went instantly to Texas' voting rights champions like President Lyndon B. Johnson and Barbara Jordan. Because of their historic work, I've always believed that, of all our rights, voting is the most important. It’s fundamental to our democracy and without it, all our other rights go out the window. There was no way I could stand idly by and let them attack our right to vote – which is why I bought a ticket back home after graduating. I became a voting rights lawyer in Texas – something I've always compared to "being a firefighter in hell" – and I fought back against extremists like Ted Cruz who used racist conspiracy theories about "voter fraud" to disenfranchise anyone who disagrees with them. I decided to bring this fight to Congress in 2018, when I defeated an 11-term incumbent to get to the House, where I've fought for voting rights at the federal level – but still, Ted Cruz is standing in the way, voting against critical legislation like the John Lewis Voting Rights Act in the Senate.
