Or, both. --------------------------------------------------------------- I brought in the new year with my brother, Conner. We each smoked a cigar at a lounge belonging to a man named Helio. My cigar was light and airy, tasting faintly of graham cracker and cracked pepper. As we smoked, we each sipped ice-cold Coca-Cola from tall glass bottles and played chess with heavy pieces carved from wood. Conner and I play chess like we live life. I'm the more emotional of the two of us and came out of the gate swinging, making several ballsy moves that later get me into trouble. Conner is much more methodical; a planner always thinking three, four and fives steps ahead. He was patient during our game and eventually picked away my pieces like a sharpshooter After leaving Helios, we ventured over to a cocktail bar called Wolfskill, where we met Conner's wife, Georgia Lea. I ordered an Old Fashioned and then another and we all spoke of the year that had came and went. Do you ever feel as though you are a passenger aboard a train, looking out the window at the ever-changing landscape? Something catches your gaze, buried off in the distance and the moment you have the chance to make it out, the train is two-hundred yards down rail. The train inched closer to the ball. Finally––12 a.m. Everybody, shouting. Everybody, cheering. Everybody, beautiful Some people, kissing. My brother and I blow a kazoo back and forth trying to match each other's rhythm. When I grow bored of my kazoo, I sip the last of my Old Fashioned, noticing that I'm neither merry not melancholy, just introspective––like a narrator watching somebody else's life play out, curious of what will happen next.
