Twitter does, and it has just reminded us. This week, a Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT holder tweeted a JPEG of a rock (just a gray rock with some shadowing, could have been made in Microsoft Paint) with the caption: 1 year ago, this NFT sold for $2,872,733. This is a true statement. There are only 100 of these particular cartoon NFT rocks, and they did begin selling for 6 figures back in 2021, culminating in a few purchases of the virtual stones for 7 figures. Back then, the NFT market was on fire, and $1 million+ sales were almost normal (even for images of cartoon rocks). Now, the NFT market is far from hot — trading volume on OpenSea has recently hit a 13-month low of $6.5 million in trades, and once-top dollar collections like BAYC are down 69%. There is no reason to believe that NFTs won’t once again come back up again — the entire crypto market is currently down, but the entire crypto market is also always cyclical and almost always unpredictable. The current floor price of the Ether Rock collection in July was 199 ETH, or approximately $339,000 today. Somewhat surprisingly, the last Ether Rock was sold about a month ago for 101 ETH. It’s also possible to buy a Wrapped Ether Rock right now on OpenSea, which would presumably give liquidity to someone whose assets are locked up…in a cartoon rock. Twitter was, as always, divided on the rock issue. One commentator wrote in regards to the $2M rock remembrance tweet, “this sale made me start learning about nfts lol,” while another wrote: “When we make ourselves extinct, it is pieces of evidence like this that aliens will use to determine that we were truly a f****** moronic species.” Without being too much of a pessimist, it may be safe to write, however, that we’ve probably said a final goodbye to the days when a virtual rock sells for $2 million. [Today’s Top Stories ] for Twitter AND Musk]( 🚨 The legal fight between Twitter and Elon Musk is drawing nearer — with both sides suffering a setback in new court rulings. Many of the billionaire's requests for data from the social network have been described as "absurdly broad" — and his demand for "trillions upon trillions of data points" have been rejected. However, Twitter has been told to disclose data from 9,000 accounts that were sampled late last year as part of efforts to determine how many profiles were spam or bots. The social network had tried to claim that the data no longer existed, but it's been given two weeks to provide it. Musk's attorney Alex Spiro saw this as a big deal, declaring: "We look forward to reviewing the data Twitter has been hiding for many months." clampdown in Afghanistan]( 🇦🇫 Afghanistan is clamping down on crypto — with local reports suggesting the Taliban have closed 16 exchanges in one province alone. Sayed Shah Sa'adat, who heads up the counter-crime unit of Herat Police, told Ariana News the central bank believes "digital currency trading has caused a lot of problems and is scamming people, therefore they should be closed." The ban is understood to apply nationwide — and according to Bloomberg, several crypto dealers have been arrested after failing to comply with the Taliban's orders. Last year, Afghanistan was ranked 20th in terms of global crypto adoption in a report by Chainalysis — with citizens embracing digital assets to preserve their wealth in the face of sanctions and closed banks. goes metaverse mad]( 🤩 MTV is betting big on the metaverse ahead of this weekend's VMAs. Snoop Dogg and Eminem, along with their Bored Apes, are going to offer a live performance of From The D 2 The LBC during the awards ceremony — in a debut "inspired by the world of the Otherside metaverse." There's also going to be an awards category for the best metaverse performance — with BTS, Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber and Charli XCX among those in the running. Music is being touted as one of the biggest use cases for the metaverse, not least because it could bring live performances into people's homes. In other developments, MTV is also planning a temporary virtual experience on Roblox in an attempt to reach younger users. Thanks for reading! Have a great day — more news tomorrow!
