Without getting into the politics of the vax, anti-vax Canadian trucker protest issue — the whole situation has brought up some pretty interesting points about how people use Bitcoin. Namely, if you are a disenfranchised group without access to traditional financial platforms, how can you really use Bitcoin? This question is being answered in real-time by the thousands of Canadian truckers who have received almost a million dollars in Bitcoin donations since their GoFundMe was shut down. Now, they have the money — how do they turn BTC into something they can use? For these truckers, there also is an added obstacle coming from the government — 34 wallet addresses have been sanctioned as Canada has imposed emergency measures to block all financial transactions in support of the truckers. In their case, rather than what us normies can more easily do — sell Bitcoin for fiat on an exchange or P2P platforms, sell Bitcoin for pre-paid debit cards or gift cards, etc. — this group has a very, very complicated game plan to first get Bitcoin into the hands of thousands of non-tech savvy truckers. In a public Google Doc, the team behind the BTC distributions has scoped out a 25-page long plan that aims to "maximize transparency" while "distribu[ing] bitcoin to non technical users quickly" and "avoid[ing] any public perception of impropriety." To understand the scale of their plan, I’ve picked out a few choice sections. One: their equipment needs include two printers, two smartphones, the "most expensive available" metal cutting shears and wrist-covering leather gloves to help with smashing up the equipment after it’s used to make Bitcoin wallets, among many, many other items. Two: volunteers handing out the Bitcoin wallet addresses to employees are not allowed to use the bathroom more than one person at a time. Three: after their use, each smartphone should be factory reset "twice" before being smashed to smithereens. It makes being able to log into your crypto exchange account, press "sell," and send the fiat to your bank account seem like an exclusive luxury, does it not?
