There was a big shake-up in the rankings in 2021. ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ Market Activity Total Market Cap $2.25 (+0.63%) 24 Hour Volume $83.74B (+27.17%) Notable Movers[(VLX) $0.4269]( (+12.26%) Notable Movers (DeFi)[(CRV) $6.60]( (+9.32%) Bitcoin Dominance 39.54 %[(-0.33)]( Bitcoin Price[(BTC) $47,115.49 (-0.24%)]( Ethereum Price[(ETH) $3,820.35 (+1.18%)]( Cardano Price[(ADA) $1,36 (-0.03%)]( Today’s Top Stories Check out [CoinMarketCap Alexandria]( for tech deep dives, analysis, daily news and easy-to-understand guides on how crypto works! [Today’s Top Stories ]( [How crypto rankings changed in 2021]( Bitcoin and Ether remained as the two biggest cryptocurrencies by market cap in 2021. But elsewhere in the upper echelons of CoinMarketCap's rankings, there were big changes. Binance Coin's blistering rally means that it now takes pride of place at No. 3, demoting Tether to No. 4. Perhaps the most sobering statistic is this: excluding Tether and USD Coin, BTC was the only coin in the top 10 that failed to secure three or four-digit gains last year. Is this going to be the new normal? [Which coins were the biggest gainers?]( Solana was ranked No. 120 in January 2021. Fast forward 12 months, and it's sitting pretty at No. 5. Prices rallied by 9,602% over the course of 2021 — despite a high-profile blockchain outage in September denting confidence in the project. Terra has also performed impressively, with LUNA up 13,170% over the same period. What makes this ascendancy all the more remarkable is that LUNA seemed to be immune to the sell-offs that gripped the rest of the market in November and December. [New entrants in the top 20]( Of course, there were some notable (and rather furry entrants) to the top 20 in 2021. Dogecoin and SHIBA INU remain in No. 12 and No. 13 — despite the value of both altcoins cooling substantially in recent months. Crypto.com Coin also made its way into the top 20. Brand recognition was fueled by a number of major partnerships, with the exchange becoming the brand-new sponsor of Staples Center in a multimillion-dollar deal. [Which altcoins fell down the rankings?]( The continued rise of blockchains such as Algorand and Avalanche was bad news for some of the older cryptocurrencies out there. The privacy coin Monero is no longer in the top 20 — and it's also been an especially rubbish year for Bitcoin SV. Other projects that were once dubbed "Ethereum killers," including EOS, have also faded into obscurity. It's going to be interesting to see how the 20 biggest cryptocurrencies change in 2022. Some will survive, while others will be eclipsed by newer projects. Thanks for reading! Have a great day — more news tomorrow!
