Mon. Dec 28, 2020 Hello! ✨ Between now and New Year’s Day, we’re taking a look back at 2020 — the good news, the bad news, the dizzying highs and the devastating lows. And today, it’s time for a recap of some of this year’s upbeat crypto news. [Make sure you check out our countdown of the 10 best crypto stories in 2020 on CoinMarketCap Alexandria, too!]( The Good News in 2020 📰 Learn all about crypto at [Alexandria]( your new online crypto source! We Helped Each Other Out 😇 In June, a flight attendant who lost his job revealed he was in big trouble. He foolishly took out a loan to buy [BTC]( when it hit all-time highs in 2017. Prices fell — and he didn’t have income to make repayments. As he lived in Abu Dhabi, he faced jail if he defaulted on the loan. So Reddit users clubbed together — making donations until he could get back on his feet. Crypto Donations Got Easier 💵 There have been some big events to raise funds for good causes in 2020, including the response to COVID-19 and Black Lives Matter. In late November, a major event was also held on Giving Tuesday — the biggest fundraising day of the year — with more than 100 crypto-friendly charities taking part. It’s super tax efficient for donors, too. Altcoins Surged 🚀 We’ve talked a lot about [BTC]( and [ETH]( but it’s been a year to remember for altcoins too. From Jan. 1 to Dec. 21, [XRP]( surged by 168% (before falling,) [Litecoin]( by 160%, [Bitcoin Cash]( by 54%, and [Chainlink]( by a staggering 600%. Even [Dogecoin]( has enjoyed some impressive gains in 2020 — fueled by a TikTok craze and approving tweets from self-appointed CEO Elon Musk. PayPal Took Crypto Seriously 🙌 For years, PayPal’s CEO Dan Schulman was skeptical about crypto. He described [Bitcoin]( as "unsuitable to be a real currency that retailers accept." Oh how things change. This year, PayPal announced it was launching a crypto service — allowing millions of users to buy and sell [BTC]( [LTC]( and [BCH]( and use it with merchants. It’ll launch fully in 2021. Mt. Gox Victims Got Answers ⏰ Those who lost money in the infamous Mt. Gox hack of 2014 finally began to see a light at the end of the tunnel. After repeated delays, a rehabilitation plan was announced — beginning the process of returning 140,000 [BTC]( to victims. Although this is substantially less than the 850,000 BTC stole almost seven years ago, Bitcoin has risen by more than 4,000% since then. Crypto Users Passed 100M! 🍾 In September, new research from the University of Cambridge suggested that there are up to 101 million cryptocurrency users worldwide — a substantial increase from previous years. It’ll be interesting to see how upbeat crypto coverage in the mainstream media, and PayPal wading into the space, will have an impact on the figures in 2021. Bitcoin Set New Records 🥇 And of course, we couldn’t do a round-up of the best news in 2020 without mentioning the most important headline of all: [Bitcoin]( shattering the highs of $20,089 set in 2017. There is now unrelenting optimism about what lies ahead in 2021, and unprecedented levels of institutional interest. Some analysts even think that BTC will never head below $10,000 again. Poll of the Day 📣 This year has never been short of drama. So here’s our question... On a scale of 1-5 (5 being amazing,) how would you rate the 2020 that the crypto industry had? This newsletter is devoted to all those who kept on believing in 2020. Here’s a reminder of what it means… A person that is optimistic and confident that market prices will increase, this person is also known to be "bullish" about the market or price.
