Thu. Dec 24, 2020 Hello! ✨ Between now and New Year’s Day, we’re taking a look back at 2020 — the good news, the bad news, the dizzying highs and the devastating lows. And today, it’s time for a recap of [Ethereum]( year. ETH Outperforms BTC! 💰 Of course, any recap of ETH’s 2020 has to begin with the fact that Ether comfortably outperformed Bitcoin in 2020. While BTC surged by an impressive 226% in the year to Dec. 20, ETH was up by 400% over the same period. And in a sign that further growth could come, ETH has barely been at 50% of its all-time high this year. Will we see fireworks in 2021? Double, Then Nothing 💸 ETH showed from the very start of 2020 that it meant business. Crypto investors fell in love with the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency on Valentine’s Day when it hit $280 — a 115% surge in just six weeks. Unfortunately, it was a little too early for traders to be rubbing their hands with glee, as a bloodbath was just around the corner... March Madness 💥 Ether wasn’t immune from Bitcoin’s dramatic crash in mid-March. In fact, it fared worse — and plummeted by 48% over 24 hours, plunging perilously below $100. But while BTC’s market cap fell by 9.78% during the first quarter of 2020, ETH’s still managed to close up 3.29%. Not many other cryptocurrencies managed to pull this off. A DeFinite Correlation ⚡️ Whereas Bitcoin spent most of 2020 correlated to stocks, Ether’s success was linked to the rapid explosion of DeFi protocols. Ethereum’s blockchain was suffering congestion that hadn’t been seen since the CryptoKitties craze. As the total value locked in DeFi surged from $1 billion to $9 billion between May and September, ETH’s value leapt up by 125%. All Eyes on ETH 2.0 👀 There’s been another driving force behind ETH’s gains: the launch of Ethereum 2.0. The ambitious upgrade has suffered countless delays, but a successful debut is regarded as extremely bullish for ETH. In the week after the ETH 2.0 deposit contract was unveiled on Nov. 4, the crypto surged by 20%. The beacon chain went on to launch on Dec. 1. A Psychological Milestone! 🧠 One of the most significant moments of 2020 came when ETH managed to punch through $600 on Nov. 24 — a level that hadn’t been seen since May 2018. Prices dipped below $500 just two days later, and struggled to meaningfully retake the $600 zone until mid-December’s industry-wide surge. The question now is how much higher ETH is set to go. 🤔 Poll of the Day 📣 Ethereum has hit some substantial milestones in 2020 — but the transition to a Proof-of-Stake network is not expected to be completed for a couple of years. So here’s our question... On a scale of 1-5 (5 being definitely,) do you think that Ethereum 2.0 will have a positive impact on ETH’s price? Here’s a reminder of what it means… Sharding is a scaling approach that enables splitting of blockchain states into partitions containing states and transaction history, so that each shard can be processed in parallel — boosting transaction speeds.
