For romance scammers, it’s a busy time of year. Like most other con games, romance scams are designed to get you to fork over some cash. In these kinds of situations, a potential dating app match will ask you to send them money for things like a plane ticket to come and meet you. Such scams, while totally not in the spirit of Valentine’s Day, are profitable -- these swindles cost consumers $1.3 billion in 2022, according to the Federal Trade Commission.
