No, we didn't make another fake image of Pope Francis in a puffer coat. [CNET]( Insider [October 24, 2023](#?ftag=CAD-04-10aac3a&utm_email=9ec2e0353644c03ce56099bfb161a49d1f8a5a22f0d884f0cd961b89d205d529&utm_campaign_id=8109204&utm_email_id=87a112456b7d1a2b4891712bd6641391e3d5554276a93fc1dc4ca2141f2083bc&utm_newsletter_id=71558&medium=email&source=iterable) [Dall-E 3 Text-to-Image AI Is New, Improved]( The next generation of DALL-E is here, bringing the newest advancements in generative AI images with it. OpenAI announced the newest version of its generative AI-powered image creation tool last week. If you’re not terribly familiar with how the tech works, it responds to prompts with images rather than words. For example, you open ChatGPT Enterprise or Plus, put in a prompt like "[electric guitar with a spiky design]( as CNET's Stephen Shankland did, and the AI creates corresponding images. If you saw that fake image of Pope Francis in a white Balenciaga coat floating around the internet earlier this year, you already have some exposure to AI-generated images. DALL-E 3 has benefited from some updates, according to testing done by Shankland. He writes that the imagery is vivid, with more detail and "fewer cases of distracting weirdness.” It isn’t perfect. Shankland found that it especially struggled with rendering bike pedals and gears -- but its improvements are notable. The chatbot component of it has also seen some upgrades, offering more conversational and prompting capabilities. Of course, I’d be remiss if I didn’t add that there are ethical concerns surrounding generative AI tech. Those include the potential ability to create abusive imagery, the possible use of copyrighted materials to train such tools, and worries about copying the styles of living artists. OpenAI does have policies in place and includes human oversight, but we’ll have to wait to see how effective they are.
