And that's not the only thing that happened. And that's not the only thing that happened. [CNET]( Insider [September 28, 2023](#?ftag=CAD-04-10aac3a&utm_email=9ec2e0353644c03ce56099bfb161a49d1f8a5a22f0d884f0cd961b89d205d529&utm_campaign_id=7835558&utm_email_id=d6035731097ea4bf5b94f7b6d5fa65a1d09f0dd18154641e35f17f686d8693e9&utm_newsletter_id=71558&medium=email&source=iterable) In my adult life, I have owned my fair share of mobile phones -- including models from Ericsson and Nokia way back in the day. I have always been interested in the rivalry which developed between Android and iOS, and so I read Andrew Lanxon's story about the [history of the two]( with interest. As he said: "Apple and Google have taken inspiration from each other for years and ...neither company would be where it is today without the work of the other." But it made me think about the smartphones I've had over the years, and though you may presume I belong in one camp in particular, the results may surprise you! I've never really exhibited a preference between the two two platforms -- I have owned several iPhones in my time -- but I usually stick to Android due to its flexibility, and because I own more of its apps. The [iPhone 15]( looks fine, but Dynamic Island or not, that huge cutout is still a turn-off. My first taste of Android was a [T-Mobile G1]( the very one announced 15 years ago this week, but I didn't much like it at all. Like most first-gen products it was pretty clunky and also huge! Nothing like the svelte iPhone of the time. Design was always a consideration for me, and as a result I had a soft spot for HTC -- though I never did make the plunge. But the first phone I remember loving was the [iPhone 4](. It was chunky -- in a good way -- with its squared-off edges and metal feel. Though the company abandoned this look a few years later I was happy to see it return from the iPhone 12 on. When it came to Android there was one company's phones I really loved: LG. I had two of its phones and thought the OS optimizations, design, and cameras were top rate. Naturally I was very sorry to see LG exit the market. Especially because I had one of the last phones -- the [V60]( which had a great audio setup -- and had to replace it with a (not quite as good) Samsung in a warranty claim. What will I get next? Probably a Samsung, but will be looking wistfully at my collection of old phones while I do so.
