The Kill A Watt meter can find out what's sucking up energy in your home. The Kill A Watt meter can find out what's sucking up energy in your home. [CNET]( Insider [August 17, 2023](#?ftag=CAD-04-10aac3a&utm_email=9ec2e0353644c03ce56099bfb161a49d1f8a5a22f0d884f0cd961b89d205d529&utm_campaign_id=7517894&utm_email_id=ed8fa5f3ef4ccc895552f6e00827ce1c38c65c44779230717e995db7229380c1&utm_newsletter_id=71558&medium=email&source=iterable) [Unplug Your Tech to Save Energy]( I'm afraid of the dark. Like, [really afraid](. I sleep with a light on in my room every single night. Heck, I wish I could sleep with every light on in the house. I'm irrationally scared of dark rooms and will even turn on lights when it isn't dark outside – if the room I'm entering is even a little bit shrouded in shadow, it's time for a light. So yeah, I'm the first to admit that I'm not very good at [energy conservation]( in the home. That said, I'm not a complete energy-sucking monster. I turn off the TV when I'm not using it, I've changed the settings on my Xbox to use the most energy-efficient mode, and I unplug my smart speakers when I feel like I'm not using them. But it turns out there are plenty of devices in the house that continue to slurp up energy even when they're off. My colleague Eric Mack took a [Kill A Watt meter]( to his house to find out which appliances he needed to unplug to help conserve energy. Spoiler alert: The TV was one of them. It used as much energy with its "sleep mode" on as it did with the feature switched off. Yikes. Should we all be unplugging our TVs every night to help with our energy bill? Maybe. But I think I'm going to start by just shutting off a few more lights. You'll find Eric's Kill A Watt tale, plus more news and reviews, in today's newsletter. -- Sarah Lord, writer INSIDER ESSENTIALS display:%20block;%20max-width:%20116px;%20%20max-height:%2015px; display:%20block;%20max-width:%2069px;%20%20max-height:%2015px; [How I Used a Kill A Watt Meter to Hack How My Home Uses Energy]( [How I Used a Kill A Watt Meter to Hack How My Home Uses Energy]( [Odds are that your devices are wasting more energy and costing you more money than you're aware.]( [See this]( [Gen Z Prevailed in a Climate Lawsuit.
