I’ve been running for what feels like hours. I’m breathing heavily and my legs are starting to cramp. I want to slow down, or stop and catch my breath. But I know I can’t. I can still hear the footsteps behind me, the confirmation that I’m still being followed. Chased. I finally see a door ahead, an asylum from the pursuer. I reach for the handle still running at full speed, close my hand firmly around the knob and pull... I shot straight up in bed, sweating, and nervous and disoriented a few days ago. No, it wasn’t a real experience. It was a stress dream. And it's stayed with me because I’m a good sleeper and I rarely ever have nightmares or anxiety [dreams](. But apparently there’s a simple explanation behind what caused the dream: heat. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but it has been hot recently. And I mean hot in a July that's been the hottest recorded month in over 120,000 years kind of way. But heat can do much more than make us feel fatigued or dehydrated. Heat plays a significant role in our sleep cycles and can even cause anxiety dreams to occur.
