We'll tell you just how much water your phone can take. [CNET]( Insider [March 16, 2023](#?ftag=CAD-04-10aac3a&utm_email=02015bee48352e908c609176b0b8e62f74e1d7c914618055c65562e7c03efb52&utm_campaign_id=6410008&utm_email_id=39c6dac40934bb2e339e939b00a0967ccd272c3539e92ebc86a6d1c3a45df98b&utm_newsletter_id=71558&medium=email&source=iterable) [Your Phone Can Take a Dunk]( I’m not generally around water too often, which is weird considering I live near the ocean. But I’m not a swimmer, don’t like to take baths and only frolic in the water occasionally during the summer. You’d think I wouldn’t be too worried about dunking my phone in water, but you’d be wrong. That’s because I’m incredibly clumsy and once managed to knock my phone from its perch on the bathroom sink straight into an unflushed toilet bowl. I fished it out with a pair of tongs that I grabbed from the kitchen, slathered it in hand sanitizer, and waited for hours to see if it [would turn on again](. It did not. I’m still traumatized. Luckily most phones now have some kind of [waterproof rating]( so they’ll work even if they take a dip. But just how far can you push it? We’ve broken it down and will let you know if your phone can withstand a trip to the bottom of the toilet (most likely) or a swim in the ocean (doubtful). Would water resistance have saved my old phone? Probably. But would I have wanted to use a phone that had been intimate with my toilet bowl? I’m not sure any amount of cleaning would have made that feel better. Keep reading for all this and much more. -- Sarah Lord, writer INSIDER ESSENTIALS display:%20block;%20max-width:%20116px;%20%20max-height:%2015px; display:%20block;%20max-width:%2069px;%20%20max-height:%2015px; [Is My Phone Waterproof?
