We have so many questions about how this will work. [View in web browser]( [CNET logo]( Insider Aug 8, 2024 Google Home Is a Gemini I’ve been a Google Home user for many years, and even though it is sometimes blindingly idiotic, it’s become an integral part of my home. The [addition of Gemini]( later this year is very promising, though it will also come with its challenges, including response times. As a test of my current system, I just asked Google what the time was -- one of the simplest queries you can make -- and it took my speaker three seconds to respond. In a moment of hubris, I then asked the speaker “what time, and on what channel, can I watch the Olympics closing ceremony?” and after three seconds it replied with: “Sorry, I don’t understand!” And this was with a relatively new Google Nest mini. It's likely that Gemini would be able to answer a query like this, but the wait times and even [hardware compatibilities]( are up in the air. With the original Google Home now eight years old, for example, it’s unknown how (or if!) a speaker like that will work with Gemini. We'll find out later this year when the Nest Aware public preview goes live.
