THE BURGER KING AD THAT CHANGED MARKETING FOREVER As a Funnel Hacker, you’re often thinking about how to attract new leads into your funnel. This story from Burger King might give you some new and exciting ideas… By 2004 Burger King’s position as the second-largest hamburger company in the world was waning and they were forced to shut down hundreds of stores. In an attempt to turn the tide, Burger King brought on advertising agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky to create a campaign for their new chicken sandwich, which was being marketed under the tagline "Have It Your Way". Instead of going the traditional route of showing people enjoying the sandwich, Crispin Porter + Bogusky, decided to do something a little different. They hired someone to dress up in a chicken outfit and recorded him responding to over 300 commands the team came up with. He was asked to do things like, dance, do push-ups, running in place, and much more. They then created the website below: Users could type commands into a box, hit submit, and the chicken would seemingly obey. If the chicken was asked to perform something inappropriate, impossible, or not on the list, it simply approached the camera and wagged its finger in admonishment. The overall effect was that the chicken seemed to be executing commands live. An obscenely simply idea. The Subservient Chicken went viral beyond belief. Once the site had been finished, the team sent it to some friends to test. Before they knew it, the site had received one million hits and it wasn’t even live. A week later three 30-second spots were aired on network television, followed by a print ad that also directed people to the website. That’s when things really took off: - The website received more than 20 million hits within the first week and 396 million hits within a year - Chicken sandwich sales went through the roof, increasing 6% per week - Burger King’s growth surpassed McDonalds’ - It won several awards, including the Grand Clio, Cannes Lions, and the Grand Prix for Viral Marketing further extending its reach Simply by being interactive and novel, this wild idea transformed the fortunes of Burger King. What wild ads can you come up with that will capture the interest of your audience that your competitors would never dare try? They could hold the key to your business growing more than ever before! TRIVIA ANSWER The first hashtag ever used on Twitter was "#barcamp" by Chris Messina in 2007. This marked the beginning of using hashtags to group related content on social media.
