What would you say is the most underutilized method for increasing conversions? Digital Marketer's Perry Belcher would tell you it's including a premium in your offer. Perry once told the story of how the magazine 'Sports Illustrated' was on the verge of bankruptcy. They were losing customers fast. They tasked marketing manager Martin Shampaine with coming up with a way to get people excited about ordering a magazine subscription. It needed to be easy to make, cheap to fulfil, but so unique that people would want to pay $55 for a year subscription. One day, while wandering around New York, Shampaine came up with the idea of giving away a football phone with every subscription. Novelty phones were becoming more and more popular so Shampaine went to work on creating a prototype. Once the prototype was ready, he sent a direct mail out to 35,000 potential SI subscribers offering the phone to see how people would react. The response was amazing! Shampaine found a manufacturer in China to produce the phone created in mass and SI purchased airtime on cable channels to promote it. The two-minute commercial quickly became something of a phenomenon. It created a cult following around the football phone, even getting mentions in movies like Wayne’s World 2. It was so popular that between 1986 and 1991, the magazine sold around 1.6 million new subscriptions, saving the company and putting the football phone on the map. The football phone wasn’t an obvious idea for a premium but people loved it. So, have a think… What premium could you include in your offer? THE CAVEMAN IDEA Does your marketing pass the 'caveman grunt' test? According to storytelling expert Donald Miller, in his book ‘Building a Story Brand’, there are three questions audiences must be able to answer within 5 seconds of looking at your landing page: 1. What is this person offering? 2. How will it make my life better? 3. What do I need to do to buy it? Take a look at your landing pages and ask yourself, would a caveman be able to grunt an answer to the three questions posed above? If they can't, there's a very high chance your conversion rate is suffering. I made a free product funnel & a funnel to my digital products. What were some of the struggles you encountered during the YFFC, and how did you overcome those? I’m very tech savvy but some parts were a learning curve for me but the days I got frustrated, I took a break from the computer and went right back with an open mind and tackled my goals for the day. Was there any specific training out of the whole challenge that really "stuck" with you as an "ah-ha" moment that you've been able to implement into your business and help take it to the next level? My “ah-ha” moment was the day when we built our first funnel challenge. That’s when I knew I could control what my audience/niche sees & buys! What advice would you provide to those going through the YFFC for the first time and may be discouraged or wondering what the possibilities are with this challenge? Don’t give up! Please don’t give up. All my ups and downs I came across - I could have given up every day but I stayed positive & didn’t let a small problem or big problem discourage me from being successful with my business!
