Changing the Narrative Surrounding Addiction with Freedom Model International Dear Friends, In two weeks, [The Freedom Model]( team will be doing our first live seminar. Freedom Model International is a movement to change the way people view addiction, and the way people with addictions are helped. As you may know, in 1935 a man named Bill Wilson created a movement to view alcoholism as a disease, and alcoholics as powerless victims of alcohol. He created a group called Alcoholics Anonymous and touted it as the only way alcoholics could stop drinking. He and other early AA members would visit heavy drinkers while they were in hospitals detoxing and explain that they were suffering from an allergy and or disease that rendered them powerless to stop drinking once they started. This was alluring as it seemed to explain the troubling ways they had been drinking prior to their hospital stay, and it took some of the responsibility for their behaviors off of them and placed it on the supposed disease called alcoholism. Because there was no help like this for heavy substance users prior to the movement he started, this filled a need within society. It created a place to send the heavy substance users that no one else was willing to deal with any longer. Wilson was committed to making AA a household name, and his efforts created the beginning of the addiction treatment industry of today – now a $40 billion industry with abysmal rates of success. While Wilson grew his movement by making people believe they were dependent on his cult to maintain a “daily reprieve” from their “alcoholism”; in other words maintaining abstinence from alcohol (and other drugs), Freedom Model International is about replacing the entire addiction disease, powerlessness, belief system with personal efficacy, self-empowerment, truth, and freedom. It’s time addiction help moved into the 21st century! Our first FMI Seminar will be Tuesday, September 28, 2021 at Noon EDT.
