The Supreme Court ruled today against a Biden administration plan to provide debt forgiveness to millions of student borrowers. That’s the (very) bad news. The good news is that this misguided — though not surprising — 6-3 Supreme Court ruling does not have to be the end of the story on student debt relief. - This Supreme Court ruling is about just one way of confronting the student debt crisis. - The Biden administration has other tools it can use. - The Higher Education Act of 1965 gives the Department of Education authority to automatically cancel debts for certain borrowers. - And the department can also create new relief programs through the normal executive branch rulemaking process.
