The debt ceiling crisis is serious. Friend, House Republicans have forced us to the brink of a debt

The debt ceiling crisis is serious. [Chuck Schumer]( Friend, House Republicans have forced us to the brink of a debt ceiling crisis. I'll never try to scare you in these emails, but I need to be frank with you about this threat. I wrote you a longer message below explaining the stakes. [But first, I need you to take action. We don't have time to lose. Our Democratic Majority is a firewall against the MAGA Republicans' radical plans to cut Social Security and Medicare and rip apart our economy. So I'm asking you to chip in to stand with Democrats in the fight ahead:]( [DONATE →]( What is the debt ceiling? It's our country's debt limit -- how much we owe. Raising the debt ceiling has become a normal part of a functioning Congress. Importantly, the debt ceiling is not how much the government plans to spend in the future -- it's how much we've already promised to pay. (And don't forget, much of the debt we owe was incurred when Donald Trump was president.) That's why it's so important to lift it. Otherwise, the government isn't legally allowed to pay its debts. And if the U.S. can't pay its debts -- if money promised under the "full faith and credit" of our country comes up short -- the whole global economy gets shaken. That could mean a major recession. But we don't really know. Because it's never, ever happened. Why is this time different? Because extreme House Republicans have proved they're actually willing to imperil our economy in order to push their radical agenda. We can't raise the debt ceiling without the Republican-controlled House. And their majority is so fragile, a handful of extremists can exert undue influence. They already held Kevin McCarthy's position as Speaker hostage until he agreed to use the debt ceiling to extort cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and more. They're going to do the same thing with our economy. What now? House Republicans have shown their true colors: Even the threat of default leads to higher costs for working families. Meanwhile, Senate Democrats are going to fight back at every turn and stand up for working families. But it won't be easy, and we're going to need your help. [You sent Democrats back to the Senate to stop the MAGA GOP and fight for progress. This is our first big battle, and it's going to take all of us standing together to win. So please, chip in today to help Democrats stop the MAGA Republicans from wreaking havoc on our nation:]( [DONATE →]( Onward, Chuck Schumer This email was sent to {EMAIL}.
