The university has faced lawsuits from former students who they’d been enticed to enroll in the programs by artificially inflated rankings or by deceptive claims about who was really running them. (Higher Ed Dive) CAMPUS CUTS I [U. of Nebraska at Lincoln’s Chancellor Proposes $12 Million in Budget Cuts]( Rodney D. Bennett, who took office in July, said the biggest cuts would be made in administrative costs, among executive vice chancellors, instructional costs, operational costs, and the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Specific cuts will be decided later, he said. (KOLN) CAMPUS CUTS II [U. of Wisconsin-Parkside Will Slash 50 Jobs to Balance Its Budget]( The campus, one of [several]( in the [university system]( to be [planning cuts]( to deal with [budget gaps]( stemming from enrollment declines, will lose about 9.5 percent of its work force through voluntary separation, layoff, or attrition to close a $5.3-million deficit. The university has already said most employees would be furloughed for up to 19 days. (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, WBAY) CAMPUS CUTS III [Fresno Pacific U. Drops 16 Degree Programs and Issues Layoffs as Deficit Looms]( The Christian university in California will also merge five schools into two. Eleven professors, or about 10 percent of the faculty, will be laid off, and 12 faculty posts will not be filled. The 88 students in the programs will be able to complete their degrees on time. (The San Joaquin Valley Sun) FACULTY SPEECH [Professor Accused of Antisemitism Is ‘No Longer Employed’ at Emory U.]( The assistant professor in the university’s School of Medicine and doctor at its hospital had been put on leave during an investigation into unspecified social-media posts. It is not known whether the faculty member resigned or was fired. (WSB) CAMPUS SAFETY [Muslim Students at U. of Connecticut Receive Threats Over Israel-Gaza War]( The email and voice-mail threats targeted the university’s Muslim Student Association and a former leader of a pro-Palestinian student group. Critics called on UConn to provide more support and security for Muslim and Palestinian students, as well as educational programs about the war and about Islam. A UConn official condemned the threats and recognized the critics’ concerns. (BBC) SPORTS HAZING [3 Former Men’s Basketball Players at New Mexico State Are Charged With Felonies]( The 37 criminal charges stem from accusations that they sexually assaulted teammates last year during locker-room hazings, the state’s attorney general said on Thursday.
