How to cope if you and your grad-school buddy are competing for the same openings If you are on the tenure-track market this fall, you may have already received a plethora of tips on [organizing]( [your CV]( and [writing cover]( [letters]( but rarely do you get much advice on how to manage your relationships during a job search. And when you do, it tends to focus on dual-career couples. But what about friendships — especially when you are both on the job market in the same field? Equally important as you prepare your application documents and interview answers is to work out how to cope with potential relationship tensions during the academic-hiring cycle. Step 1: Have a communication plan in place for job-market updates. You and your friend may be in the same field, the same department, or even share the same adviser. It’s entirely possible that the two of you will apply for many of the same positions, and one or both of you could get interviews. Face reality head-on and be transparent with position updates. Some awkwardness is to be expected, but to minimize it, avoid telling each other in person and opt instead for text messages. That will allow you time and space to react authentically and privately, and then respond.
