Academics still talk about âthe job marketâ in the singular, as though only one exists. They mean, of course, the faculty job market. But there are many different labor markets, and increasingly, Ph.D.s are conducting a âtandem searchâ â that is, simultaneously pursuing openings in academe and industry. Most job candidates undertake a tandem search for mixed reasons. Maybe the tenure-track market in your field is hypercompetitive. Maybe you are genuinely interested in both research and application. Maybe you are geographically restricted in where you can live (or where you want to live), have a partner with a career of their own, or are concerned about finances after five or more years on stipends and/or adjunct wages. Maybe youâre just curious about whatâs out there and donât want to close any doors. Whatever your reasons, a tandem search keeps your options open. It is, however, an exercise in timing. The faculty hiring process spans the length of an entire academic year, from August or September all the way through to March or April. The length of industry hiring processes varies wildly, but it is almost never that long. For that reason, youâll want to focus on your academic job search in the fall and on your industry job search in the spring â with some overlap.
