What to consider in setting up your physical and digital space in a new leadership position. When you move into a new administrative position â whatever the officeâs budget â you will have to shift your thinking about your office space and stuff to take public utility and opinion into consideration. Figuring out what you should, and shouldnât, ask for can be especially challenging if the promotion happens quickly and unexpectedly. You may have months, or weeks, until your start date. Use that run-up period to prepare so that your first day on the job is not a shock in terms of what you need physically, from software to coffee cups. Of course, you have much to learn on the job itself, but itâs always good to listen to advice (from staff members and peers) about how to make the transition as smooth as possible. Just keep in mind that, when it comes to campus offices, the functional can also be political. So donât go overboard on the redecorating (though some people do). But neither should your office be so sparse that it looks like youâre a drive-by consultant, rather than someone committed to the place.
