ENROLLMENT [Jaded With Education, More Americans Are Skipping College]( Hundreds of thousands of people who came of age in the pandemic didn’t go to college. Many, deterred by cost or student-loan debt, turned to hourly jobs or careers that don’t require degrees. What looked like a pandemic blip has turned into a crisis, with enrollment dropping 8 percent from 2019 to 2022, even after in-person classes resumed. The slide is the steepest on record. (Associated Press) DATA [College Tuition and Fees Are Up 4.7% Since February 2020, Labor Dept. Reports]( The rise was less than the 15.7-percent increase in prices for all items over the same period, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. FEDERAL POLICY [Higher-Ed Provisions of President Biden’s Budget for the 2024 Fiscal Year]( The plan, for the fiscal year that begins on October 1, would increase spending on Pell Grants and other student-aid programs, would expand free community colleges, and would support tribal, minority-serving, historically Black, and under-resourced colleges, among other things. Republicans in Congress said the budget would never be approved. (Education Department statement, The Chronicle) THE PECKING ORDER [Bard College Ends Participation in ‘U.S. News & World Report’ College Rankings]( The New York college cited as its [rationale]( the rankings’ “inherent flaws and the harm they cause to students, families, and institutions alike.” Bard [followed]( Colorado College as the [most]( recent [institution]( to [stop cooperating]( in the rankings’ production. (Bard statement, The Chronicle) STUDENT SAFETY [Parents of Student Who Died in Hazing Incident Are Awarded $6.1 Million]( The jury’s verdict concerned the alcohol-fueled death, after a Phi Delta Theta ritual in 2017, of Max Gruver, a freshman at Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge who was pledging the fraternity. It’s not clear how much Stephen and Rae Ann Gruver will actually receive because they have already settled out of court with most of the defendants. (The Advocate) ACCIDENT [College Student in Flight Training Is Among Dead in Florida Collision]( The Polk State College student was being trained in an airplane operated by the college and Sunrise Aviation, local authorities said. It collided with another airplane, and both fell into a lake.
