Advice on making it through a hiring process that tends to reward extroverts. Many character traits of an introvert lend themselves to success in management positions. Unfortunately for introverts, before being hired, you must go through an extensive vetting process that is often more conducive to extroverts. That process is unlikely to change, so the question becomes: How can you better position yourself as a candidate in a system that favors extroversion? Itâs not true that introverts donât like people or that theyâre all shy. But an introvertâs energy is derived internally, so after several hours of social interaction, you need time to recharge. Trouble is: Youâre unlikely to get much scheduled downtime during a two-day marathon job interview. Here are some options: - You may have to psych yourself up ahead of time: Try reading for 30 minutes on the plane (instead of working), hitting the gym prior to a full day of meetings, or meditating in the morning for 10 minutes in your hotel room.

Itâs important that a break doesnât detract from your time connecting with people â for example, donât cancel lunch with someone. But a short break can give you a respite to re-energize.
- What if the schedule doesnât allow any breaks? Snatch brief periods of time to decompress in the minutes prior to interviews and meetings. Sometimes a meeting will end early and your host will offer to give you 10 minutes to catch up on emails. Take it. For an introvert, those 10 minutes are golden and may make the difference between feeling âonâ for dinner or feeling like youâd rather have room service.
