Search committees are seeking some new traits in todayâs chief executives. Candidates for leadership positions in academe must check an inordinate number of boxes in these complex and nuanced times. And they face inherent contradictions in the must-have lists of various search-committee members: Professors want a scholar, trustees want a money-raising entrepreneur, students want an uncompromising advocate, lawmakers want reassurance that political correctness will not rule the day. In just the past two years, much has changed in leadership recruiting. Here are some of the new highly sought-after characteristics: - An ability to work fast. Academic tradition favors discourse, deliberation, and inclusiveness, but campus leaders today must make more decisions in less time. Search committees are looking for candidates who move quickly and intentionally toward achieving concrete goals.
- Expertise in crisis management. The pandemic has ended business as usual across higher education. Search committees are keenly aware that this is a defining moment from which their institution will emerge either stronger â or not. They seek leaders who can truly empathize, who not only care deeply about the people in the organization but can adeptly respond to their needs.
